Doteveryone is delighted to announce our newest round of Fairer Tech Event Grant recipients!

Each round awards £500 to three recipients to support them in making their events fairer. We’ll be running one more round in early 2018.

Here are our three recipients for round 02.

Afrotech Fest

Afrotech Fest is a two-day tech and digital festival by and for black people of African and Caribbean heritage. The festival won’t replicate models for tech events, festivals and conferences that currently exist. It will instead explore where technology meets the arts, history, news, activism and representation. Afrotech Fest provides a space where people across a variety of backgrounds can imagine a future that’s free of the problems of the present.

The festival is a response to the underrepresentation of black people in the technology industry — especially those who are marginalised in additional ways — as well as tech conferences and festivals being too expensive for many to attend. We want to create a festival that is intentionally diverse and inclusive of those often excluded.

How will this make Afrotech Fest fairer? It will provide between 20 and 30 free tickets for our event, helping more people to attend and participate.

NHS Hack Day — Cardiff

The NHS Hack Days are a network of hackathons that bring together health professionals, patients, carers and technologists to prototype useful, patient-centric solutions to current NHS IT problems.

How will this make NHS Hack Day fairer? By paying a community interest company to help people with chronic illness and learning difficulties pitch ideas and contribute alongside technologists and healthcare professionals at the event.

Rebel Makers Birmingham

Rebel Makers is a network of peer-to-peer making clubs for everyone who is interested in technology — regardless of age or ability. At our Clubs, Rebels get together to share existing knowledge and learn new skills in a fun, safe and collaborative environment, exploring anything and everything from electronics and programmable hardware, through to writing code, design, and media production.

How will this make Rebel Makers Birmingham fairer? To supply equipment and software licences for makers who can’t afford their own.
